Welcome to the Jungle!

quad excursion driving through the jungle

Welcome to Wheelie Trails ATV tour! Get away from the tourist crowds in Playa del Carmen. Join our quad excursion and experience this unique off the beaten path adventure in Riviera Maya.

We offer a private quad excursion and an unforgettable visit to a pristine underground Cenote. Our reviews don’t lie: this is the best ATV tour in town!

We offer two types of ATV tour experiences in the Riviera Maya. Both will take you into the local jungle just 10 minutes outside of Playa del Carmen:

  • ATV Jungle Explorer
  • ATV Jungle & Cenote

ATV Jungle Explorer Tour

Quad excursions rarely come alone. When you look for an off-road tour in Playa del Carmen you’ll soon find that tour companies typically combine them with other activities, for example: ziplining, swimming, snorkeling, etc. Beware, there are many companies where you drive your ATV in huge groups and you will not be able to drive at your pace.

We are actually the only tour company in the Mayan Riviera that offers ATV driving as a “stand-alone” activity. So, if you are looking for an excursion that only involves quad driving in the jungle – look no further! This tour is for you. Plus our tours are private. No need to worry about a dozen other drivers. We’ll go as fast (or slow) as you feel comfortable with.

ATV Jungle & Cenote Tour

If you are looking for a combined activity, this tour will be great for you. You will again drive through the jungle and additionally you’ll also see the wonders of an amazing local underground cenote. As well as take a refreshing dip before you hop on your quad again.

Which ever option you prefer for your ATV adventure remember that all our tours are guided and private. Our guide will take care of you and you can drive at the pace you are most comfortable with. Plus, he shows you the best paths through the jungle to match your skills. Our quad excursion is a fun activity for advanced drivers and beginners. Families, couples and small groups love the private and personalized experience.

If you are lucky you might also be able to see local wildlife. This is not a zoo but actual animals that live in the jungle! While driving our ATVs through the jungle we’ve seen monkeys, coatΓs, wild boars, snakes, spiders, birds, lots of beautiful butterflies and other interesting insects…

Do a jungle tour

Our guide is very knowledgeable about local fauna, flora and Mayan culture. They are always happy to point out interesting details and answer all your questions. Remember, our tour is private, so what ever part of the tour interests you the most is what we will focus on.

Visit a limestone cave

Once you have explored the jungle trails, you will arrive at the limestone cave with an underground cenote. This is a truly magical place. No wonder these caves are considered sacred by the Mayan people. Once you are equipped with all the necessary gear (helmets with flash lights, life vests, water shoes) we are ready for our decent into the cave. Be prepared to marvel at the incredible rock formations and the unreal reflections of the crystal clear water.

Swim in a Cenote

After a refreshing dip in the cenote waters we are off again on our ATVs and back through the jungle trails to our starting point in Playa de Carmen.

FAQ: Should we book a single or a double rider ATV tour?

Whether you are an experienced driver or have never even touched an ATV before. Our adventure tours in Playa del Carmen will make you have a fun time! We offer two driving options. Find out which one is best for you!

Here at Wheelie Trails ATV Adventure Tours in Playa del Carmen we want you to have the best experience and of course a lot of fun! For both our ATV jungle explorer tour and our ATV jungle & underground cenote tour you get to choose if you would like to drive your own ATV or if you would like to share your ride with a friend or partner. We call them single rider or double rider ATVs.

Single Rider ATV

Single rider ATV

Single rider refers of course to one person driving the quad bike. To us this is the most fun way because you get to control your vehicle at all times. Especially if you are an experienced driver you will want to book a single rider ATV. Even if you are a beginner’s or first time driver this might still be a great option for you because you’ll have more space on the 4wd bike and as we’ve mentioned before they all have automatic transmission and are easy to drive.

Double Rider ATV

Double rider ATV
Double rider ATV

Option number two is the double rider ATV where you team up and share your ride with a buddy. Remember, all our tours are private and we only leave in small groups. So, if you’d like to go on a shared ride please make sure to bring your buddy πŸ˜‰

The double rider option is great if you are unsure about driving your own ATV or if you’d like to drive for a shorter amount of time. You’ll be able to switch half way, so everyone gets their turn driving. If you aren’t driving you just grab on to your buddy, enjoy the ride and you can focus on the jungle and animals you might see along the way.

Conclusion: whichever option you choose you’ll have a fun adventure in Playa del Carmen!

Private tours in Playa del Carmen

You want to look for private tours in Playa del Carmen. This is how you make the most of your stay and get the best value experience during your vacation!

Excursions away from the masses

Mass vs. private tours in Playa del Carmen, that’s the big question. Mexico is a very touristy place and pretty much all of the tours offered in your hotel lobby take you on big busses to very crowded places. Don’t get us wrong, we believe this attests to the beauty and popularity of the places. Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza and Tulum are incredible places. The parks like Xcaret and Xel-Ha are amazingly well organized and a lot of fun. Also, booking a tour from the comfort of your hotel lobby has also its advantages.

If you are a true traveller and don’t want to be just another tourist, you might feel a bit out of place though. Maybe you are wondering if there are even still off-the-beaten-path activities left in Playa del Carmen and the Mayan Riviera.

The good news is that YES, the personalized, private, off-the-beaten-track experience still exists. Especially in Playa del Carmen, where tourism has been perfected by the big tour companies, a niche for small tour companies still exists and is what you should be looking for.

How to get away from the masses

One option is to organize your own excursion. You can easily rent a car or hop on the bus and visit almost any tourist attraction in the area on your own. This option is not just for the brave, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to get around.

You may say, ok, I can rent a car but eventually I will still catch up again with everyone else at the attraction. Well, not if you have your timing right! Most tours arrive at the ruins around 11am or noon. The trick is to get there early when the attraction opens or later before closing time. This is when you’ll be able to enjoy the places the most.

Book small local tour companies

There are a number of small local tour companies (like us) which don’t work with the big tour operators but rather focus on a quality experience. Not only will you help support local economy you will also enjoy yourself a lot more. Plus, you’ll be surprised to find that it won’t break your bank.

Make sure to do your research and look at the company or activity carefully before you give them your money. The best way is of course to look at their online reviews on Tripadvisor or Google and read about other traveller’s experience with the company.

Enjoy the ride!

We are confident that by following these few simple tips you’ll have a great time during your vacation. We hope of course you decide to book our ATV tour, but really there are so many things to do and see in the area you’ll have to be back to do them all. Trust us on this one πŸ˜‰

ATV driving tips for your excursion in Playa del Carmen

An ATV tour is the best excursion in Playa del Carmen. To us that is anyways but all those 5-star-reviews won’t let us lie… Maybe you are worried because this is your first time driving an ATV. Worry no more, our ATVs all have automatic transmission and are a breeze to drive. Plus, with the below tips you will cruise your quad bike like a pro!

As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, before each tour you will go through our safety protocol. Our guide will patiently explain you how the ATVs work so you are confident to start your excursion in Playa del Carmen and have some fun! Basically all you have to do is acelerate and brake. It’s really as easy as that!

The bikes are heavy and stearing may seem difficult at first. Though you really don’t need to push the handlbar too much for the vehicle to turn. The trick for it to be even easier is to lift your elbows up and away from your body. That way you can just lean in and steer the quad with your body weight instead of heaving to use your muscle power. If it feels good for you you might even stand up for some turns.

Steering pro tip

Another little but very helpful trick is how to acelerate. Yes you press on the acelerator and the ATV moves forwards (or backwards). If you do it with the tip of your thumb though, after a while it might get numb or you won’t have enough strenghts to continuously acelerate. No worries we will make brakes during the tour so you can rest your thumb. We recommend you to move your thumb a bit forward and acelerate with your thumb joint. You’ll see it’s a lot easier and feel more in control of the acelerator.

Meet Zazil on your ATV tour…

Our ATV tour and off-road trails in Playa del Carmen are our passion but we also love nature!

Palm tree right ouside the wheelie trail ATV jungle adventure office.
Coconut palmtree right outside our office.

It makes sense! Our ATV tour takes us out of downtown Playa del Carmen and into the jungle. We were very excited when we discovered a birdsnest. It’s right in the coconut tree right outside of the new Wheelie Trails ATV Adventure office in the Bellavista area in Playa del Carmen. We where even more excited when a little baby bird hatched a few weeks ago!

ATV jungle tour little pigeon outside the office in Playa del Carmen
Zazil just a few days old…

We figured it was a baby pigeon and kept an eye out for it every day. Watching it grow ever so quickly is quite fun. It’s amazing how fast these little creatures grow up.

We named her Zazil which is Mayan for “sunrise”, “light” or “clarity”. A beautiful local name we think, that honors the Mayan heritage. During our quad excursions our guide loves to explain a bit more about Mayan culture, language and customs. Many people think Mayan culture is extinct like other ancient civilizations. It’s actually still very much alive in the Mayan Riviera and Yucatan peninsual and needs preserving. Something we are all for and want to promote. So, that’s why we called this little pigeon Zazil. Besides ,we think it’s a pretty cool name. πŸ˜‰

Zazil made her first flight attempts last week. At first carefully going back and forth near by branches and cables. Now she’s able to come down from the tree to get some breadcrumbs (which we left for her) and fly back up…

Soon she’ll be off on her own adventures… Meet Zazil before or after you take our ATV tour here in Playa del Carmen. πŸ˜ŽπŸ•Š She’s one of the many animals you might get to see on your 4WD jungle tour. Spoiler alert: coatis, monkeys, iguanas, and other native animals which live in the jungle… But more about that in another post.

A day at the shop

Regular maintenance of our ATVs is an important part of our job. That’s why you are able to enjoy your 4wd activity in Playa del Carmen without any worries. We always make sure your ride is in top conditions!

We offer a top notch 4wd activity in Playa del Carmen and conditions of our vehicles are paramount for a safe ride. Our mechanic is very skilled and can repair just about anything and if there is no repair work to be done he is looking for ways to improve things around here. But more about that in another post…

Last week we spent some time at our shop replacing the stator of one of our quad bikes. The ATV wouldn’t start and we soon saw why when we opened it up. Three of the stator coils were burnt…

Wear and tear is quite strong in the area because of the tropical climate and heavy duty of our daily tours. Luckily our mechanic is onto everything. Getting spare parts can also be a challenge as many part need to be shipped from other parts in Mexico or even imported from the US. We always try to have a decent amount of stock of the most common parts. We also have relationships with local and international dealers, so we don’t have to wait too long for replacements.

Luckily we had a replacement in stock and it didn’t take our mechanic long to replace the part. Then we reassemble and we try if the ATV starts…

… and it did! πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸŽπŸ˜Ž

Local life…

Our quad excursion explores the Mayan Riviera but not before taking us through our local Playa del Carmen neighborhood. Our neighborhood is called “Bellavista” and is a quiet residential area with small restaurants, shops and lots of trees along the way.

Bellavista means “beautiful view”. You can be the judge of that on your quad excursion in the Mayan Riviera πŸ™‚ There are also many trees and blooms along the way mingled with bigger and smaller houses.

Bellavista neighbourhood – Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Along the way you might also get a glimps of what life is like. On the below picture for example our quad riders pass by a big red water truck which delivers water cans to residential houses.

Quad excursion Mayan Riviera
Local truck delivering water gallons.

Tap water is not drinkable in the area, so these trucks drive through the neighborhoods every day selling big 25 litre water cans. You can’t miss them as they have a very distinctive way of shouting their respective water brand name outside of each house. They will exchange your empty cans for full ones. Each 6.6-gallon-can costs roughtly $1.7 USD. In each home you’ll typically find a water dispenser so that there is cool drinking water readily at hand.

After a short 10 minute drive you be out of paved roads and into the jungle to exprience the Mayan Riviera at its best. These are just some of the daily routines of locals that you might get to observe on your ATV tour. Playa del Carmen is a rapidly growing town in the heart of the Mayan Riviera. The area has a very international flair as people come to work in tourism from all over the country and all over the world!
